Buying a Laptop? 6 Things to Know

6 Things to Know When Buying a Laptop

laptops When you are making a large purchase and in this case a laptop, laptop computers, netbook or whatever you call your computer you should consider these six areas:

1. How Do You Plan to Use Your Laptop?

How will you use your laptop computer? Is it for business or for personal use? If for business you'll need to be sure any business accounting or database software can operate with its' specifications. If it's for fun and recreation will you be playing games on and offline or downloading music? While most laptops can handle such task it doesn't hurt to make sure you have the best computer suited to the task you will be doing most.

2. How Big is the Laptop Screen?

The size of the screen is going to determine your comfort level. If you will be using it infrequently you may not mind a smaller screen but keep in mind when reading text you may not see whole pages side to side in a font size that you can read. In other words text will be smaller with a smaller screen and that means you'll be doing more scrolling. For games you'll definitely want a larger screen. As a rule of thumb it's always best to get the largest screen you can afford.

3. How Much Does the Laptop Weigh?

Again the question has to be how do you plan to use your laptop? Will it primarily be left in one place or will you be carrying it with you a lot? For portability lighter is always better. As long as your computer can operate your software and you have a screen size you are comfortable with then smaller is better.

4. How Large (or Small) is the Laptop?

As in the case of weight generally if you want a lighter weight unit then it's going to have to be smaller too. As stated earlier size of the laptop will likely affect the size of the screen.

5. What Extras Does the Laptop Have?

Some things are standard on a laptop but don't be surprised at the variations. I remember years ago when I purchased a new desktop computer I expected the floppy drive to be included. I was wrong. This drive was starting to be phased out. Because I still had a lot of important files on floppy disk I had to buy an external drive. The point is whatever features you want or need be certain it's included and that means enough memory too if you plan to do a lot of gaming.

6. How Much Does the Laptop Cost?

This is always the biggest determination of what laptop most people end up buying. Know what you can afford and shop within that range. Buy the best specifications possible. As most people know no sooner than you buy a Laptop? a new one with more and better features will be available. It's better to buy a top of the line product now. It'll be outdated soon enough.

It's not easy choosing the right laptop. You'll want one that will suit all of your needs (and wants) if that's also possible in your price range. Now that you know what to look for it's time to go shopping.
