How I Watched the TV Evolve

To shop for the best plasma tv deals when I was a child would have been a thought that would never cross our mind. In fact the work plasma likely referred to a chemical substance in blood and not tv technology as we know it today. In fact the word "televison" or tv would have been a fairly new entry into conversation.

As a child I didn't know anyone who owned a TV. Most normal households did not have one. When we could afford one it had a black and white picture. Sometimes the picture was very hard to view. In some cases picture could best be described as snowy therefore it could be snowing anytime of the year (on television).

I didn't comprehend the technology that permitted me to view a scenery of others nearby or in far away places. All I understood is was often hard work to view TV because the picture frequently rolled. Just when to get up and adjust the control it would stop.

It seemed as soon as you sat back down it happened again. You couldn't be a couch potato back then if you wanted to be. If you watching TV it was similar to a workout at the gym. You'd get up and down and up and down...Everytime you had to adjust the picture. Remote controls had not been invented yet.

Also there was the tv antenna to deal with. It always required adjusting in hopes of keeping a picture. When you stabilized the picture if didn't always stay that way.

The tv signals in those days came in and out. At first we only had one local station transmitting a signal and it came from a local tower not a satellite. Later we had more TV stations and so the world of television evolved into several choices instead of one.

Early TV had it's problems. The inside was filled with a combination of tubes and wires. Tubes burned out frequently. My father was a mechanic of sorts and attempted our repairs. If a tube burned out he took it to a free testing machine at a nearby drugstore.

I often wondered what tubes and drugstores had in common but it was considered normal at least in our family. If a bad was identified and replaced easily that was the best case scenario. A serious problem might require a genuine repairman. Repairs in those days were cheaper than the cost of replacing a TV.

Then came the invention of color for TV but it wasn't in the form of color tv today as we know it but rather an inexpensive colored transparent plastic sheet that was placed over the front of the screen. For the most part everything on television was the same shade.

This is how television evolved as I saw it. When comparing my childhood experience with television is like comparing it to the dinosaur age. The huge number of channel choices we have now and the clear resolution of pictures today can't be compared to then. Back in the 1950's kids didn't have to be persuaded to get away "from" the TV. Instead you had to convince them the television was worth watching if in fact it was on a snowy picture in summer.

To shop for the Best Plasma TV Deals today is a true privilege even if I couldn't afford one. I love remembering what I often heard my grandmother say and it surely applies to televisions today when she said: "what will they think of next?".
